Florida Research Study on Coconut Oil
Study should report findings soon!
In just a few more months, We should be hearing results of a coconut oil study.
The trial is funded by the National Institute on Aging (at least partly). Undertaken at the University of South Florida in Tampa, the study was scheduled to start in June of 2013 and finish in September 2015. The study was set up for sixty five participants with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s or dementia including ages from 55 to 90 years.
The test is using a proprietary combination of coconut oil and medium chain triglyceride oils. The testing is supposed to be finished in June 2015, so hopefully they are already beginning to accumulate the findings.
I’m so anxious to hear if the study was successful.
If you know someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia, you are probably aware of how hopeless it can be. Without a known cure or long term treatment, it becomes a long drawn out terminal illness.
While it is doubtful that coconut oil will offer a complete cure (I wish!), if it helps for a few years, most of us would feel it worthwhile.
Is There a Downside to Coconut Oil?
The only concern I have heard about coconut oil is that is can influence cholesterol levels, increasing chances for heart disease. That is why I strongly suggest you get with your doctor before you begin using it in higher quantities. Especially if you do not yet have symptoms of the disease. The doctor may want to increase your periodic blood tests to see if there is a negative effect using the oil.
But if your loved one has dementia already, and you know that there is no cure, the benefit may outweigh the downside. If we could have had Mom retain her memory a few more years, it surely would have been worth it to us.
I’ll be watching for updates on this study, so do stay tuned. If you would like to read the article, you can find it here.
