Gifts for the Aging: Canes that are Cool
The majority of our aging seniors eventually begin to have some balance issues. Whether they are weak when getting up from a seated position or if they are wobbly when walking, any fall is a major risk.
Since bones become brittle they are prone to breaking bones. It seems like broken hips and broken wrists are the most common to occur.
If you have a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease, you may know that balance is a part of the loss they will suffer. It doesn’t always happen, but it’s good to be prepared in case.
A walker may be a good suggestion for many. If you can get your loved one to use it, the earlier the better. If you wait too long with dementia patients, it will be hard for them to remember to use it, let alone learn and adapt to it.
If not ready for a walker, a cane can be a good place to start. And there is no reason it can’t be fun besides. They make some handsome and some adorable canes for men and women. There is also a good variety for stability. It will depend on the need. Encourage the fun part though, the debonair quality to a cane. That little extra help when they are walking can prevent a fall that could cause deterioration. Check out some of these. They look fun to use to walk down the hallway.

For style and charm, can’t you see your senior looking pleased with this cane? I love the soft, smooth wood finish. There’s another one I thought would be a charmer too, that’s the Victorian Style Wood Walking Stick. With its gold handle, it reminds me of old times, men with mustaches, cheerfully chatting with each other.
You can get this pretty in purple cane in other colors and designs as well. Any woman would enjoy the intricate pattern on this cane. This one is the “Royal Canes Pretty Purple Designer Adjustable Derby Walking Cane.” I think it’s beautiful!
For superb balance, you might prefer this ‘quad’ cane with a base that will take weight without any slipping. It folds up too, which can make it easy to have along when traveling or storing. Of course the height is adjustable.
I had to include this one for its technology. This cane, the Secure® Walking Cane comes equipped with a built in LED Flashlight and a push button Panic Alarm & Alert Light. I love the idea of that, especially for a more independent senior. You can adjust the light to point down or out. Should they need help, they can push the alarm button. That would have to add to their sense of security when they are out or walking through their home at night.
