Learning A New Language: Brain Cross Training
Many adults feel it is too difficult to learn another language as we age. Certainly it is far easier for children. Nevertheless, the fact that it is hard for us may be precisely the benefit. Even if you don’t do it well, it still stimulates your brain to think differently.
Some studies have shown it can increase cognitive skill by thirty percent. That is huge! It is effective for your memory, but besides that it also helps with skills in reasoning, sound distinctions, and multi-tasking. Using different areas of the brain, makes each an important aspect for brain health.
It is so easy to find a program these days too, even free. At my library there are books of course. You can order workbooks from Amazon or a book store.
My favorite; If you have a smart phone, you can download language programs onto your music or audiobook function. There are so many to choose from, free from the library’s online program. Or get podcasts featuring your language of choice. If you don’t want to download a program, get an app. iTunes offers hundreds of them.
