A recent study at Harvard has shown that meditation increases the grey matter in your brain.
Dr. Sarah Lazar and associates tested 16 volunteers. Brain scans were done before the eight week program and after. After the eight weeks those doing the meditation had increased grey matter in several areas of the brain, including the hippocampus.
In the 8 week program, the volunteers participated once a week in a group session of what they called “mindfulness,” then were asked to practice for a half an hour daily.
Mindfulness focuses on the individual’s body, striving to quiet the brain from the constant busy-ness. It involves scanning your body slowly in your mind, deep and slow breathing, along with a light form of yoga.
